Looking Back on the Evolution of the Smartphone
Think back to even just 5 years ago. The very idea of having a company release a smartphone that was purely designed for gaming seemed so farfetched at the time. You might have scoffed at the idea of people buying smartphones just because of their gaming features. You may have even thought that it wouldn’t have been a smart business tactic and you would have expected it to fail.
Of course, in the past, people primarily turned to smartphones for communication and productivity. Even when the first iPhone came out, it was always touted as a device for productivity tasks like making calls, sending messages, and surfing the web. However, it was also touted as a multimedia device. And that was the first sign of evolution for phones in general. It started becoming more than just a productivity and communication tool.
Then, after that, it wasn’t just about media consumption anymore. Smartphones were fitted with the best cameras on the market and they started becoming tools for content creators as well. Many people on YouTube have made some very lucrative careers by recording videos on their smartphones. This was another evolution in the mobile device space and it’s one that’s continuing to shape the way phones are constructed today.
Nowadays, there is another evolution taking place and a lot of that has to do with the rise of the mobile gaming industry. Back when the earliest smartphones were coming out, most of the games that people were playing were probably within the realms of titles like Angry Birds or Plants vs Zombies. Fast forward to 2021 and smartphone users are making use of their mobile devices to run titles like Call of Duty and PUBG.
In 2021, more and more people are playing games on mobile devices than ever before. Of course, there are many factors that have contributed to the rise in popularity of mobile gaming. A lot of that has to do with the fact that smartphones have been becoming more and more powerful as of late in terms of its technology. The hardware that is being fitted into these devices is incredibly complex and sophisticated. They are capable of powerful tasks and that’s why many developers are eager to take advantage of all that computing power. Gamers are obsessing over first-person shooters, battle royales, team strategy games, sports simulators, and live casino games. All of the flagship smartphones these days are fully equipped to handle these titles.
Another reason why mobile devices are so popular now is that people are starting to value the convenience that technology is able to provide them. It’s a lot easier for people to gain access to mobile devices and stable internet connections these days. That means more and more consumers are opening their eyes and seeing the immense effect that mobile technology can have on their lives, whether from a productivity standpoint or from a gaming standpoint.
What Will the Future of Mobile Gaming Look Like?
Right now, more and more big hitters in the industry are funnelling their money into the research and development of mobile gaming technology. All of that is fueled by the fact that the mobile gaming market is huge. Enterprising capitalists and investors are more than eager to jump on the hype train of mobile gaming right now as it continues on its upward trajectory. Many experts say that the industry is expected to grow by as much as $63 billion within the next five years.
Sure, there will still be a huge bulk of the market that will primarily turn to their smartphones as communication devices or productivity tools. After all, that’s really the root of what a smartphone is supposed to function as. It is also true that the PC and console gaming industries are likely to still dominate the gaming space. They offer better hardware and that always leads to a better quality of gaming for the user. However, there is still that solid in-between that mobile gaming provides. It offers a reasonable gaming experience with its formidable hardware and software. It also has the convenience of being able to play whenever and wherever you want.
Ultimately, the rise of mobile gaming is likely to stay consistent with the rise of technology as a whole. As mobile hardware becomes more and more powerful, games will offer better gaming experiences for consumers.
