For many years I was a dedicated first-person shooter (FPS) gamer and I only played on console systems. I tried PC gaming and mobile gaming platforms, but they just didn’t suit me. I liked the feel of a standard size game controller and I just didn’t get the precision I wanted from a PC’s keyboard/mouse or the on-screen controls on a mobile phone or tablet. Fortunately, Apple rolled out Bluetooth controller support with its 2019 iOS update. This opened the door for more advanced gaming options on Apple’s mobile devices and when I started actively playing Call of Duty: Mobile in 2022, I was able to have a near-console expereince thanks to my Xbox Elite Controller paired to my iPhone.

As much as I enjoy the experience I get with my Xbox controller, I am always looking at other options for better performance when I game. I want to make sure I’m getting the best possible gaming experience and I always want to have a backup option in case my primary controller fails. I’ve tried many different controllers including the following and none of them have met my gaming needs except the Microsoft Xbox Elite 2 controller.

Since I’ve used such a wide variety of controllers, I had my doubts when I picked up the Rainbow 2 Pro Elite Wireless Gaming Controller. I quickly changed my tune once I had it configured and playing CODM with it.

User Experience

The Rainbow 2 Pro Elite Wireless Gaming Controller comes in a fairly standard sized gaming controller retail box. The name of the device and its main features are listed on the front of the box and the brand colors (bright orange and dark gray) are very prominent. When you open the box, you find the controller, its charging dock, and extra accessories for the gamepad. If you are familiar with the Xbox Elite 2 controller, the package is very similar to that.

Since the Xbox Series 2 Elite controller is my ‘go-to’ option for my CODM gaming activities, I took immediate notice to the similarities. The button and joystick layout on the Rainbox 2 is nearly identical and even the charging dock is close to the same as what the Xbox Elite 2 has.

The controller was very easy to set up. One of the things I’ve discovered while playing CODM is that not all controllers are compatible with that game — even if they are compatible with the mobile device. So, I was curious if I would run into programming issues like I did with other controller brands. Fortunately, I did not. My iPad Pro (my main gaming device for CODM) recognized it right away as a Bluetooth compatible controller and CODM saw I was connected to a controller. I did have to customize my button layout and program the pro-level buttons, but that was expected.

Now, even though the controller has a similar look to an Xbox controller, I found the gameplay to be quite a bit different — in a good way! The Rainbow 2 controller was very responsive and the back paddle buttons have a mechanical click when you press them. I loved this about the controller. I thought my response time in-game was faster than the Xbox Elite 2 controller and just really enjoyed my time playing with it.

I seriously considered switching over to the Rainbow 2 controller, but there were two big things that caused me to pause with that. First, there are only 1 physical paddles on the back. You can program the top M buttons as paddles, but I’m so used to four paddles that this threw me off a bit. While I could potentially relearn this new button layout.

The only options for updating the controller are through the app. My concern there is longevity. What happens if the company goes out of business or they stop supporting the app? Then I’m left with a dead controller. Some people might see this as a minor concern given the price-point of this controller.

1. Looks and feels like an Xbox controller.
2. Very responsive.
3. Easy to customize with the app and on the controller.

Cons

1. You must have app to do updates; you can’t just plug it into an Xbox.
2. There are only two physical paddles on the back.

When a new iPhone comes out, I always jump at getting the upgraded model. My phone of choice is usually the Pro Max (6.7” screen) version and I almost never keep the phone in a case. User Experience

Incipio cases come in a simple, branded retail-style box. The front of the box has a cutout so that users can experience the materials used to make the cases first-hand. The callouts on the front of the box for the cru. for MagSafe case indicate the 8ft drop protection, built-in magnets for MacSafe compatibility, and the raised edge protection for the iPhone’s screen. The back of the box also indicates that the case is scratch resistant.

When I slid out the side of the box to pull the case out, I was immediately taken with the simple yet elegant design of it. I happened to get the Black Camo edition of the case and when I installed my phone into it, I was wearing a polo shirt that had a similar design. It was a coincidence, but something that still caught my eye. I love the minimalist color design that Incipio integrated into this case. Even though it is a camo print, it’s very subtle and can easily match up with most styles.

Installing the phone was easy. I started with the Action Button side of the iPhone and then worked the case around the other edges. The case snapped into place and I was surprised at how the phone just seemed to settle into the case. Even though it’s highly protective, the case is not bulky and it makes the somewhat slippery iPhone finish much easier to handle.

The cru. case feels great in the hand. While the edges are smooth, the back has a canvas feel to it and it makes it very easy to use the phone for standard tasks. Once the case was on my phone, I didn’t feel concerned whatsoever that my phone wasn’t protected. I have been able to charge my phone wirelessly and via MagSafe chargers. The charging port is easily accessible and the buttons still have a tactile feel to them.

• The best quality video in a smartphone is upgraded thanks to A17 Pro, with improvements in low-light video and Action mode.

The preferred smartphone for creative pros and filmmakers gets even better with new pro workflows. Users can now get up to 20x faster transfer speeds with an optional USB 3 cable. iPhone and third-party solutions like Capture One also help photographers create a pro studio, allowing them to shoot and instantly transfer 48MP ProRAW images from iPhone to Mac. ProRes video can be recorded directly to external storage, enabling higher recording options up to 4K at 60 fps, and greater flexibility on set when using iPhone as the main camera. iPhone 15 Pro also introduces a new option for Log encoding and is the first smartphone in the world to support ACES, the Academy Color Encoding System, a global standard for color workflows.

Coming later this year, iPhone 15 Pro will add a new dimension to video capture with the ability to record spatial video for Apple Vision Pro. Next-Level Wireless Performance and Connectivity

The iPhone 15 Pro lineup offers convenient new ways to charge, find friends in busy places, and stay connected while traveling. Both models use the USB‑C connector, a universally accepted standard for charging and transferring data, allowing the same cable to charge iPhone, Mac, iPad, and the updated AirPods Pro (2nd generation). Users can also charge AirPods or Apple Watch directly from iPhone with the USB‑C connector. iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max support USB 3 for data transfer speeds up to 10 gigabits per second, up to 20x faster than before.

Both models feature the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, enabling two iPhone devices with this chip to connect at three times the range as before. This opens up a new way to use Precision Finding for Find My friends, so iPhone 15 users can share their location and find each other, even in crowds. Precision Finding is built with the same privacy protections that users have come to trust in Find My.⁵

Expanded Safety Capabilities for Peace of Mind

The iPhone 15 lineup offers critical safety capabilities to provide assistance when it matters most, including Crash Detection⁷ and Emergency SOS via satellite.⁸ Currently available in 14 countries and regions on three continents, Emergency SOS via satellite has made a significant impact in users’ lives. This groundbreaking service will come to Spain and Switzerland later this month.

Building on this innovative satellite infrastructure, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max introduce Roadside Assistance via satellite. Beginning in the U.S., when a user has car trouble and cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are not available, they can now connect to AAA, the country’s largest roadside assistance provider.⁹ An intuitive interface, including a short questionnaire to capture important details, will transmit the information via satellite so AAA can message with the user directly and dispatch help to their exact location. Access to Roadside Assistance via satellite will be included for free for two years. Service is covered according to AAA membership, but is also available separately for nonmembers.¹⁰

Better for the Environment

iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are designed with the environment in mind. As Apple continues to work toward its 2030 goal of making every product carbon neutral — from design to manufacturing to customer use — the company is prioritizing clean electricity across the entire supply chain and designing products with recycled and other low-carbon materials. iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max now use more recycled content, with a 100 percent recycled aluminum substructure and 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery — both firsts for Apple. iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max also include 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 100 percent recycled gold in the USB‑C connector as well as the gold plating and tin soldering in multiple printed circuit boards. Both models meet Apple’s high standards for energy efficiency and are free of mercury, PVC, and beryllium. Over 99 percent of the packaging is fiber-based, bringing Apple closer to its goal of completely removing plastic from its packaging by 2025.

To further reduce impact on the planet, Apple will no longer use leather in any new Apple products, including iPhone accessories. Apple is introducing a new FineWoven Case with MagSafe and FineWoven Wallet with MagSafe, made from a durable and elegant microtwill with a soft, suedelike feel. The material is made from 68 percent post-consumer recycled content and has significantly lower carbon emissions compared to leather.

The 5-core GPU has 50 percent more memory bandwidth for smooth graphics when streaming videos and playing games. A new 16-core Neural Engine is capable of nearly 17 trillion operations per second, enabling even faster machine learning computations for features like Live Voicemail transcriptions in iOS 17 and third-party app experiences — all while protecting critical privacy and security features using the Secure Enclave. 

Expanded Safety Capabilities for Peace of Mind

The iPhone 15 lineup offers critical safety capabilities to provide assistance when it matters most, including Crash Detection³ and Emergency SOS via satellite.⁴ Currently available in 14 countries and regions on three continents, Emergency SOS via satellite has made a significant impact in users’ lives. This groundbreaking safety service will come to Spain and Switzerland later this month.

Building on this innovative satellite infrastructure, iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus introduce Roadside Assistance via satellite. Beginning in the U.S., when a user has car trouble and cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are not available, they can now connect to AAA, the country’s largest roadside assistance provider.⁵ An intuitive interface, including a short questionnaire to capture important details, will transmit the information via satellite so AAA can message with the user directly and dispatch help to their exact location. Access to Roadside Assistance via satellite will be included for free for two years. Service is covered according to AAA membership, but is also available separately for nonmembers.⁶

Powerful Connection Capabilities

The iPhone 15 lineup offers convenient new ways to charge, find friends in busy places, and stay connected while traveling. Both models use a USB‑C connector, a universally accepted standard for charging and transferring data, allowing the same cable to charge iPhone, Mac, iPad, and the updated AirPods Pro (2nd generation). Users can also charge AirPods or Apple Watch directly from iPhone with the USB‑C connector.⁷ Both models support MagSafe and future Qi2 chargers for wireless charging.

Both models feature the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, enabling two iPhone devices with this chip to connect at three times the range as before. This opens up a new way to use Precision Finding for Find My friends, so iPhone 15 users can share their location and find each other, even in crowds. Precision Finding is built with the same privacy protections that users have come to trust in Find My.⁸

iPhone 15 models continue to deliver a high-quality, superfast 5G experience⁹ and improved audio quality on phone calls, including those made on FaceTime or third-party apps. Sound quality gets even better when users select Voice Isolation to come through loud and clear, even if they are somewhere noisy. 

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have eSIM, a more convenient and secure alternative to a physical SIM card, with support from more than 295 carriers. Featuring iOS 17

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus feature iOS 17,¹⁰ making iPhone even more personal and intuitive with new capabilities:

• The Phone app gets major updates with Contact Posters, which allows users to customize how they appear to their contacts, and Live Voicemail, which leverages the power of A16 Bionic to see real-time on-device transcription as someone leaves a voicemail. Users can even pick up the call while the caller is leaving their message.
• Messages gets a new stickers experience, more powerful search, transcription of audio messages, and Check In, which allows users to automatically notify friends and family when they have made it to their destination safely.
• NameDrop gives users a new way to use AirDrop to more easily share contact information by simply bringing two iPhone devices together. The same gesture can be used to AirDrop content and more.
• StandBy gives users a customizable full-screen experience with glanceable information designed to be viewed from a distance when iPhone is on its side and charging. With support for Live Activities, Siri, incoming calls, and larger notifications, StandBy is perfect for a nightstand, kitchen counter, or desk.

iOS 17 delivers many more updates, including Journal,¹¹ a new app that helps iPhone users reflect and practice gratitude through journaling; improvements to autocorrect and Dictation; greater protection for Private Browsing in Safari; password and passkey sharing with iCloud Keychain; pet recognition in Photos; and much more. 

Better for the Environment

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are designed with the environment in mind. As Apple continues to work toward its 2030 goal of making every product carbon neutral — from design to manufacturing to customer use — the company is prioritizing clean electricity across the entire supply chain and designing products with recycled and other low-carbon materials. iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus now use even more recycled content, with 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery and 100 percent recycled copper in the main logic board, copper wire in the Taptic Engine, and copper foil in the inductive charger in MagSafe — all firsts for iPhone. Both models also include 75 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure, 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets, and 100 percent recycled gold in the USB‑C connector as well as the gold plating and tin soldering in multiple printed circuit boards. The iPhone 15 lineup meets Apple’s high standards for energy efficiency and is free of mercury, PVC, and beryllium. Over 99 percent of the packaging is fiber-based, bringing Apple closer to its goal of completely removing plastic from its packaging by 2025.

To further reduce impact on the planet, Apple will no longer use leather in any new Apple products, including iPhone accessories. Apple is introducing a new FineWoven Case with MagSafe and FineWoven Wallet with MagSafe, made from a durable and elegant microtwill with a soft, suedelike feel. The material is made from 68 percent post-consumer recycled content and has significantly lower carbon emissions compared to leather.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 is powered by custom Apple silicon in the all-new S9 SiP. Double Tap Gesture

Innovations such as the Digital Crown and Taptic Engine — along with gestures like tap, swipe, wrist raise, and cover to mute — make Apple Watch simple and intuitive to use. With a new double tap gesture, users can easily control Apple Watch Ultra 2 using just one hand and without touching the display. Users can tap the index finger and thumb of their watch hand together twice to quickly and conveniently perform many of the most common actions on Apple Watch Ultra 2. Double tap will also open the Smart Stack from the watch face, and another double tap will scroll through widgets in the stack.

Double tap controls the primary button in an app so it can be used to stop a timer, play and pause music, or snooze an alarm. The gesture can be used to answer and end a phone call, take a photo with the Camera Remote on Apple Watch, or even switch to the new Elevation view in the Compass app to see the relative elevation of saved waypoints.

The new double tap gesture is enabled by the faster Neural Engine in Apple Watch Ultra 2, which processes data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and optical heart sensor with a new machine learning algorithm. The algorithm detects the unique signature of tiny wrist movements and changes in blood flow when the index finger and thumb perform a double tap. The double tap gesture will be available in a software update next month.

Brighter Display

A new advanced display architecture pushes the maximum brightness of Apple Watch Ultra 2 to 3000 nits — 50 percent brighter than the first generation of Apple Watch Ultra and the brightest display Apple has ever designed — for greater readability in harsh sunlight. For dark rooms or early mornings, the display can also lower to just one nit so as not to disturb people close by. Flashlight also benefits from the new display architecture; rotating the Digital Crown temporarily doubles the brightness to better light the way.

Modular Ultra Watch Face

A new watch face designed for Apple Watch Ultra — Modular Ultra — takes advantage of the large display, using the outermost edge to present real-time data, including seconds, altitude, or depth. It offers the most complications of any Apple digital watch face to customize for sports, outdoor adventures, and ocean and water activities.

Tested for Extremes

Apple Watch Ultra 2 is designed for extremes and has been tested for use across the largest range of altitudes for any Apple product, from 500 meters below sea level to explore the lowest valleys, and up to 9,000 meters to ascend the world’s tallest peaks.

Recreational Scuba Diving and Freediving

Apple Watch Ultra is perfect for water sports, including extreme activities like kitesurfing and wakeboarding, along with recreational scuba diving to 40 meters — and now freediving — with the updated Oceanic+ app from Huish Outdoors.¹

The built-in Depth app now saves a log of each session so users can review the most recent sessions on Apple Watch Ultra or view the complete history of all dives with a GPS entry point in the Fitness app on iPhone.

During a freedive with the Oceanic+ app, users will see critical data like depth and elapsed time, and receive target depth alerts, all in big, bold, glanceable text. Between dives, heart rate zones help users monitor and lower their heart rate, and preset alarms like surface time and elapsed session time guide users through each training session. The detailed logbook provides a full profile, including descent and ascent speeds.

On-Device Siri with Ability to Access and Log Health Data

For the first time on Apple Watch, Siri requests can be processed on device. For requests that do not require information from the internet, like starting a workout or setting a timer, Siri does not rely on Wi-Fi or cellular networks, resulting in quicker and more reliable responses. The powerful Neural Engine also makes dictation up to 25 percent more accurate.

On-device processing is private and secure, and now Siri can be used to access data from the Health app for health- and fitness-related queries. For example, a user can ask how many hours of sleep they had the previous night, for progress on closing their Activity rings, to start an outdoor run or cycling workout, or make requests like setting a waypoint with just their voice, even with no connectivity. Users can also make Siri requests on Apple Watch Ultra 2 to log health data such as their weight, body temperature, period, or medications taken.²

Precision Finding

The ability to use Apple Watch to find iPhone is a favorite user feature. Now, the S9 SiP includes a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip to enable Precision Finding for the iPhone 15 family, which has the same chip. Precision Finding provides distance and direction, as well as visual, haptic, and audio guidance to a misplaced iPhone, even if it’s in a different room or a user doesn’t remember where it’s been stowed after a dive, for example.

Featuring watchOS 10

Apple Watch Ultra 2 runs watchOS 10, a milestone update that includes:

• A fresh approach to quickly view information with redesigned apps and a new Smart Stack to show relevant widgets right when they’re needed.

Carbon Neutral Models

Select case and band combinations of Apple Watch Ultra 2, Apple Watch SE, and the new Apple Watch Series 9 are Apple’s first-ever carbon neutral products. As part of Apple 2030, the carbon footprint of Apple Watch Ultra 2 has been significantly decreased. Emissions were reduced from the three biggest sources of greenhouse gases — materials, electricity, and transportation. The small amount of emissions remaining are offset with high-quality carbon credits from nature-based projects. Apple Watch Ultra 2 paired with an Alpine Loop or Trail Loop features 95 percent recycled titanium, compared with no recycled titanium in the first Apple Watch Ultra.³ A new logo on Apple Watch Ultra 2 packaging indicates models that are carbon neutral.

Apple today introduced Apple Watch Series 9, bringing new features to the world’s best-selling watch and achieving a significant environmental milestone. Apple Watch Series 9 is more powerful than ever with the new S9 SiP, which increases performance and capabilities; a magical new double tap gesture; a brighter display; faster on-device Siri, now with the ability to access and log health data; Precision Finding for iPhone; and more. Apple Watch Series 9 runs watchOS 10, which delivers redesigned apps, the new Smart Stack, new watch faces, new cycling and hiking features, and tools to support mental health.

For the first time, customers can choose a carbon neutral option of any Apple Watch, representing a significant milestone toward Apple 2030: Apple’s plan to be carbon neutral across its entire business, manufacturing supply chain, and product life cycle by 2030.

The new Apple Watch lineup can be ordered today, with availability beginning Friday, September 22.

Powerful New S9 SiP

Apple Watch Series 9 is powered by custom Apple silicon in the all-new S9 SiP. Apple’s most powerful watch chip yet delivers systemwide improvements and brand-new features, including a new double tap gesture and on-device Siri with the ability to access and log health data privately and securely. Apple Watch Series 9 also has a new 4-core Neural Engine that can process machine learning tasks up to twice as fast, when compared with Apple Watch Series 8. The power efficiency of the S9 SiP allows Apple Watch Series 9 to maintain all-day 18-hour battery life.¹

Double Tap Gesture

Innovations such as the Digital Crown and Taptic Engine — along with gestures like tap, swipe, wrist raise, and cover to mute — make Apple Watch simple and intuitive to use. With a new double tap gesture, users can easily control Apple Watch Series 9 using just one hand and without touching the display. Users can tap the index finger and thumb of their watch hand together twice to quickly and conveniently perform many of the most common actions on Apple Watch Series 9.

Double tap controls the primary button in an app so it can be used to stop a timer, play and pause music, or snooze an alarm. The gesture can be used to answer and end a phone call, and even to take a photo with the Camera Remote on Apple Watch. Double tap will also open the Smart Stack from the watch face, and another double tap will scroll through widgets in the stack.

This new double tap gesture is enabled by the faster Neural Engine in Apple Watch Series 9, which processes data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and optical heart sensor with a new machine learning algorithm. The algorithm detects the unique signature of tiny wrist movements and changes in blood flow when the index finger and thumb perform a double tap. The double tap gesture will be available in a software update next month.

Brighter Display

The power-efficient S9 SiP and advanced display architecture increase the maximum brightness of the Apple Watch Series 9 display up to 2000 nits — double that of Series 8 — making it even easier to read text in bright sunlight. For dark rooms or early mornings, the display can also lower to just one nit so as not to disturb people close by.

On-Device Siri with Ability to Access and Log Health Data

For the first time on Apple Watch, Siri requests can be processed on device. For requests that do not require information from the internet, such as starting a workout or setting a timer, Siri does not rely on Wi-Fi or cellular networks, resulting in quicker and more reliable responses. The powerful Neural Engine also makes dictation up to 25 percent more accurate than Apple Watch Series 8.

On-device processing is private and secure, and now Siri can be used to access data from the Health app for health- and fitness-related queries. For example, a user can ask how many hours of sleep they had the previous night, for progress on closing their Activity rings, or about their blood glucose level if they have a connected monitor. Users can also make Siri requests on Apple Watch Series 9 to log health data such as their weight, period, or medications taken.²

Precision Finding and HomePod Integration

The ability to use Apple Watch to find iPhone is a favorite user feature. Now, the S9 SiP includes a second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip to enable Precision Finding for the iPhone 15 family, which has the same chip. Precision Finding provides distance and direction, as well as visual, haptic, and audio guidance to a misplaced iPhone, even if it is in a different room.

UWB also brings deeper integration between Apple Watch and HomePod. When an Apple Watch user gets within 4 meters of a HomePod playing audio, Apple Watch Series 9 will launch Now Playing to control the media. Or if nothing is playing on HomePod, media suggestions will appear at the top of the Smart Stack.

Featuring watchOS 10

Apple Watch Series 9 runs watchOS 10, a milestone update that includes:

• A fresh approach to quickly view information with redesigned apps and a new Smart Stack to show relevant widgets right when they’re needed.
• Delightful new watch faces: Snoopy, Palette, and Solar Analog. A new Nike watch face, Nike Globe, lights up the lines on the globe with each passing second.
• Bluetooth connectivity for power meters, speed sensors, and cadence sensors arrives for cyclists, unlocking new metrics and Workout Views, and cycling workouts.
• A cycling workout can automatically show up as a Live Activity on iPhone and utilize the full screen when tapped.
• New Compass Waypoints and Maps capabilities to further help during outdoor adventures.
• Additional tools to support mental health with state of mind logging in the Mindfulness app.
• The ability to measure time spent in daylight using the ambient light sensor to help reduce the risk of myopia and provide additional benefits to physical and mental health for all ages.

Carbon Neutral Models

Select case and band combinations of Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra 2, and Apple Watch SE are Apple’s first-ever carbon neutral products. As part of Apple 2030, the carbon footprint of Apple Watch has been significantly decreased. Emissions were reduced from the three biggest sources of greenhouse gases — materials, electricity, and transportation. The small amount of emissions remaining are offset with high-quality carbon credits from nature-based projects. Apple Watch packaging has been redesigned to be 100 percent fiber-based, and a new logo on the packaging indicates models that are carbon neutral.

Apple Watch SE

Apple Watch SE continues to deliver the core Apple Watch experience at a more affordable price point, and is a great way for users to start their Apple Watch journey, use with Family Setup, or gift to their loved ones. Additionally, Apple Watch SE offers Activity tracking, high and low heart rate notifications, Fall Detection, Emergency SOS, Crash Detection, and watchOS 10.

Lineup

• Apple Watch Series 9 is available in 41mm and 45mm sizes in starlight, midnight, silver, (PRODUCT)RED, and a new pink aluminum case, as well as stainless steel in gold, silver, and graphite cases.
• Any aluminum Apple Watch Series 9 with a new Sport Loop band is carbon neutral.
• Apple Watch SE is available in 40mm and 44mm aluminum cases, and is carbon neutral when paired with a new Sport Loop band.
• Apple Watch Hermès is available in stainless steel in silver and space black.

Bands

Apple is introducing FineWoven, a luxurious and durable microtwill made of 68 percent post-consumer recycled content that has significantly lower carbon emissions compared to leather. FineWoven has a suedelike feel, and is available with the Magnetic Link and Modern Buckle bands. Starting today, Apple will no longer use leather in any new Apple product, including watch bands.

The popular Sport Loop band has been redesigned to include 82 percent recycled yarn. All new Apple Watch Sport Loops are carbon neutral.

Apple worked with Nike and Hermès on more environmentally friendly band collections. The Nike Sport Band now contains 32 percent or more recycled fluoroelastomer, including colorful flakes made from excess bands that create a randomized pattern, making each band unique, while the Nike Sport Loop with a space-dye pattern repurposes yarn from previous seasons.

A new collection of Hermès bands draws on the house’s rich history in textiles and craftsmanship. Two new woven bands are introduced: Toile H is an interpretation of the brand’s signature checked canvas, and Twill Jump is a rich solid color with contrasting details. The first-ever knitted band for Apple Watch, Bridon, is hand-braided with a bold chevron pattern, while Kilim is made of sporty, waterproof molded rubber and has a deployment buckle. A classic new watch face, Hermès Radial, complements these four new band styles.³

Apple today announced its first-ever carbon neutral products in the all-new Apple Watch lineup. Innovations in design and clean energy have driven dramatic reductions in product emissions of over 75 percent for each carbon neutral Apple Watch.¹ This milestone marks a major step in the company’s journey toward its ambitious Apple 2030 goal to make every product carbon neutral by the end of the decade, including the entire global supply chain and the lifetime use of every device Apple makes.

As part of Apple 2030 and the company’s broader environmental efforts, Apple has also ended the use of leather across all of its product lines, announced its first entirely fiber-based packaging for the new Apple Watch lineup,² and continued to expand the use of recycled materials in iPhone. The company also introduced a new tool in the Home app called Grid Forecast,³ which helps inform users when their power grid has cleaner energy available, so they can decide when to use electricity.

Every Product Carbon Neutral by 2030

Apple has adopted a clear and rigorous approach to product decarbonization that prioritizes reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the three biggest sources across the product life cycle: electricity, materials, and transportation. Only after Apple steeply cuts product emissions, will the company apply high-quality carbon credits from nature-based projects for emissions that cannot yet be avoided or reduced with existing solutions.

Each carbon neutral Apple Watch model meets the following strict criteria: 100 percent clean electricity for manufacturing and product use, 30 percent recycled or renewable material by weight, and 50 percent of shipping without the use of air transportation.⁴ These combined efforts result in at least a 75 percent reduction in product emissions for each model. The company will use high-quality carbon credits to address the small amount of remaining emissions, resulting in a carbon neutral product footprint. Every carbon neutral Apple Watch — which includes any aluminum Series 9 and SE models when paired with a new Sport Loop, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 when paired with a new Trail Loop or Alpine Loop — is certified by SCS Global Services, a leader in environmental standards and certification.

The Path to 2030

Apple’s first carbon neutral products are the result of years of significant work and innovation across the company and its global supply chain. They also represent the latest step on a journey that began over a decade ago.

In 2020, Apple achieved carbon neutrality for its global corporate operations and announced Apple 2030: a bold strategy to be carbon neutral across its entire value chain by 2030. Apple’s plan centers on an aggressive 75 percent reduction in overall carbon emissions from 2015 levels. By avoiding activities that generate carbon, significantly expanding renewable energy across the company’s corporate operations and supply chain, and designing with recycled and renewable materials, Apple has so far reduced total emissions by over 45 percent since 2015, while still growing revenue by over 65 percent in the same period.

As Apple accelerates efforts to decarbonize its value chain, every product represents an opportunity to reduce emissions — from the electricity used for manufacturing and charging devices, to materials and shipping.

Spurring Progress in Clean Electricity

All manufacturing for the carbon neutral Apple Watch models is powered by 100 percent clean electricity through investments and sourcing by Apple and its suppliers. Additionally, every supplier that manufactures parts and components for these models has committed to 100 percent renewable electricity for all of their Apple production by the end of the decade. Apple also works with manufacturing partners around the world to advocate for policies that support wider deployment of clean energy solutions.

Apple began building and investing in large-scale solar and wind farms to power its data centers and offices over a decade ago. In 2015, the company started working with its manufacturing partners to help them create and invest in their own solar and wind projects, and source renewable energy for all Apple production. Since 2018, all of Apple’s corporate offices, data centers, and retail stores worldwide have been powered by renewable electricity.

Thanks to these combined efforts, Apple and its global suppliers support more than 15 gigawatts of clean energy around the world today — enough to power over 5 million American homes. Across all product lines, more than 300 global suppliers — representing over 90 percent of Apple’s direct manufacturing spend — have now joined Apple’s Supplier Clean Energy Program, committing to 100 percent renewable electricity for all Apple production by the end of this decade.

Electricity for manufacturing and charging devices represents the largest source of Apple’s emissions across all product lines. To address the latter, Apple has committed to invest in large-scale solar and wind projects around the world. For the carbon neutral Apple Watch models, the company will match 100 percent of customers’ expected electricity use for charging.

Innovating in Low-Carbon Design 

Apple has pioneered the use of many key recycled materials in its products through world-class product engineering, extensive design qualification, and supply chain expertise. The new products announced today build on these achievements.

To further reduce impact on the planet, Apple is ending the use of leather across all of its product lines, including iPhone accessories and Apple Watch bands. The company will replace leather with a new textile called FineWoven, an elegant and durable twill made from 68 percent post-consumer recycled content. FineWoven offers a subtle luster and a soft, suedelike feel, and is available on iPhone MagSafe cases and wallets as well as the Magnetic Link and Modern Buckle Apple Watch bands.

As recycled and renewable materials often have a lower carbon footprint than primary materials, Apple’s industry-leading progress in the use of recycled content also advances the company’s Apple 2030 goal. The new FineWoven material has significantly lower emissions compared to the more carbon-intensive leather, and both the new iPhone 15 and the Apple Watch lineups advance progress toward the company’s 2025 targets for the use of 100 percent recycled metals in key components. This includes 100 percent recycled rare earth magnets and the company’s first use of 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery of iPhone 15, Apple Watch Series 9, and Apple Watch Ultra 2.⁵ Additionally, the popular Sport Loop has been redesigned with 82 percent recycled yarn, which includes material from discarded fishing nets. Customers looking to upgrade to the new carbon neutral Apple Watch models can take advantage of Apple Trade In, and Apple will refurbish the device for a new owner, or recycle it for free.

Apple is also accelerating progress toward plastic-free packaging by 2025. In addition to achieving the first 100 percent fiber-based packaging for the new Apple Watch and band lineup, the packaging for every iPhone 15 model is over 99 percent fiber-based.

Reducing Transportation Emissions

Transporting products around the world makes up about 9 percent of Apple’s comprehensive carbon footprint. The company is shifting more product volume to shipping modes that are less carbon-intensive than air transport, such as ocean or rail. Apple’s carbon footprint methodology shows that shipping the same product by ocean emits 95 percent fewer emissions than by air.

For the carbon neutral Apple Watch models, including watches and bands, the company will ship at least 50 percent of the combined weight using non-air modes, cutting total transportation emissions nearly in half. Additionally, the packaging of all Apple Watch Series 9 and SE models has been redesigned for compactness, with a new, smaller shape that allows for 25 percent more devices per shipment.

At the same time, Apple is committed to supporting broader efforts to decarbonize shipping industries, such as by being a member of the First Movers Coalition, and by supporting analysis to identify pathways for developing sustainable aviation fuels. The company also seeks out technical innovations — including the use of alternative fuels and electric vehicles — and selects vendors that offer low-carbon options to help further drive decarbonization in the industry.

Investing in High-Quality Carbon Removal

After achieving steep reductions in product emissions, Apple plans to cover residual emissions with high-quality carbon credits primarily from nature-based projects that remove carbon from the atmosphere, like restoring grasslands, wetlands, and forests. Carbon removal is critical to addressing climate change and achieving global climate goals, as leading scientific bodies like the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have emphasized.

Apple defines high-quality credits as those from projects that are real, additional, measurable, and quantified, with systems in place to avoid double-counting, and that ensure permanence. Apple has helped advance natural carbon-removal solutions that meet this definition by creating the innovative Restore Fund, which currently supports projects in Latin America. The company uses credits from projects that are certified to international standards such as Verra; the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards; and the Forest Stewardship Council.

For the carbon neutral Apple Watch models, the high-quality carbon credits used to compensate for the remaining emissions will come from projects like the Restore Fund’s investments with Arbaro Advisors and BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group, which are helping to restore and protect high-quality working forests and native ecosystems in Paraguay and Brazil.

Introducing Grid Forecast

As Apple decarbonizes its value chain, the company is also committed to engaging with customers and creating technology that helps them understand and address their environmental impact.

Grid Forecast is a new tool in the Home app on Apple devices that shows when a user’s electrical grid has relatively cleaner or less clean energy sources available. For example, there are times when wind and solar projects produce more energy than the grid can use, leading to some of it being wasted. There are also times when electricity is being generated with lower emissions. By using electricity during these cleaner times, customers may lower the climate impact of the electricity they use at home.

Apple uses data that combines grid, emissions, and weather information into one, easy-to-follow signal. This can help people make decisions about the best time to run large appliances and charge electric vehicles or devices throughout the day. In the contiguous United States, Grid Forecast is available in the Home app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch, and can be added as an iOS widget or a watch face complication. As additional data becomes available through ongoing industry collaboration, Apple will continue refining Grid Forecast to maximize impact.

Beyond its 2030 goal, Apple is also working toward a 90 percent reduction in emissions by 2050 — which requires advocating for collective action from governments, businesses, and individuals to accelerate global progress in the fight against climate change.

Better for the Environment

The new AirPods Pro are designed with numerous materials and features to minimize their impact on the environment, including the use of 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets and 100 percent recycled gold in the plating of multiple printed circuit boards. The case also uses 100 percent recycled tin in the solder of the main logic board and 100 percent recycled aluminum in the hinge. AirPods Pro (2nd generation) are free of potentially harmful substances such as mercury, BFRs, PVC, and beryllium. Redesigned packaging eliminates the outer plastic wrap, and 90 percent or more of the packaging is made using fiber-based materials, bringing Apple closer to its goal of completely removing plastic from all packaging by 2025.

New commitments from more than 50 suppliers in the U.S., Europe, and Asia have driven recent growth in Apple’s Supplier Clean Energy Program, which now represents over 90 percent of the company’s direct manufacturing spend. The milestone brings Apple closer to its ambitious goal to be carbon neutral across every product by 2030.

Already carbon neutral for its global corporate operations since 2020, Apple’s 2030 strategy is centered on the science-based target of reducing emissions by 75 percent by the end of the decade. Since 2015, Apple has worked in close partnership with its global suppliers to address the electricity used to manufacture Apple products. Manufacturing is the single largest source of emissions in the company’s carbon footprint, and powering it with 100 percent clean energy is a key driver in making all Apple products carbon neutral — like those in the new Apple Watch lineup.

Suppliers operating in 28 countries have committed to bringing over 20 gigawatts of renewable energy online through Apple’s Supplier Clean Energy Program. Newly committed partners in advanced manufacturing technologies include Skyworks Solutions, Analog Devices, Cirrus Logic, and more in the U.S., and Renesas Electronics in Japan. The number of participating Korean suppliers has grown nearly 30 percent this year, to 23. In China, 14 more companies have pledged to use clean energy since April 2023, including Jingmen GEM, a supplier of key recycled material used in Apple products. Across Europe, companies including Sappi Limited, LeMur, and Schoeller Textil AG have recently joined, bringing the total to 34 suppliers.

Apple has been tracking yearly progress on suppliers reducing their Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, and in the fall of 2022, the company called on suppliers to decarbonize their Apple production by 2030. In 2022, the 13.7 gigawatts of renewable electricity online in Apple’s supply chain avoided 17.4 million metric tons of carbon emissions — the equivalent of removing nearly 3.8 million cars from the road. With support from Apple to identify sources of high-quality renewable energy, many suppliers have also chosen to decarbonize beyond their Apple production.

As a result of Apple’s environmental efforts, the company has cut its overall emissions by over 45 percent since 2015, even as its business has grown. User Experience

Just like other Anker products, the 6-in-1 67W Charging Station comes in a simple, blue and white Anker product box. Aside from the small amount of information on the back of the box, there isn’t anything that indicates what is stored inside. The charging station is well-packaged and comes with a small user guide.

As far as set up goes, the charging station only needs to be plugged into a wall. Then, whatever devices need to be charged can be plugged into their corresponding ports. It’s pretty cut and dry. There is no complicated startup or software to download for compatibility sake. I love that the charging station is so flat and easy to pack. The wall plug is also a big plus in my mind.

When I test out chargers, I run a standard 30-minute charging session. During that time, I note the progress of devices that are charging and calculate their charging rate at the end of the test. In this particular case, I used my Apple Watch Series 8 and the Nano 30W Power Bank as test subjects. The watch started with a 33% charge and the power bank started with a 29% charge. After 30 minutes, the watch gained 51% and the power bank gained 34% power. The charging rate for each device was 1.7% and 1.13% per minute respectively. I thought these were very strong charging rates and I’m excited about the results.

The only downside I found with this device was how warm it got after charging those two devices. When I unplugged the two charging devices, I noticed the heat and got out my thermal camera to take a reading. I found the charging station had a range of 75.9º to 111.9º F. The hottest part of the charger was near the ports. While this temperature reading isn’t high enough to be concerning, it does seem rather hot to the touch and it’s worth noting.

User Experience

While there are two versions of the S Series Digital Drawing Tablets, I had the opportunity to use the 10-inch version. The S1060 tablet came in a simple retail-style box. The front of the box has an image of the product on the front, but it doesn’t match the color of the product inside. For example, the box showed the Carbon Black tablet, but I received the Very Peri color. This is a minor issue to report, but still something to note. The tablet and its accessories were all wrapped in plastic and secured in the box.

Getting started wasn’t difficult. UGEE makes it pretty easy by providing a download link for the driver/application and by only requiring on cable connection to your computer. I was impressed to find that USB-C and MicroUSB adapters were included with the accessories and that within a few minutes of unboxing the device, I was using it. The application that is provided by UGEE allows users to customize the buttons on the tablet and change things like sensitivity and other preferences.

I completed testing of the tablet using my MacBook Air. Aside from granting permissions, I did not have any connection issues or compatibility problems to overcome. I used the tablet in three different creative apps — Lightroom, Figma, and Affinity Photo. In Lightroom, I completed some photo touch up work. The pen/tablet were very responsive and when I made contact with the tablet, that translated to an action on the screen immediately. In Lightroom, I was able to navigate easily using the pen and it was much easier to do the touch-up work I needed to.

I didn’t have any issues using it in Figma, but I did find that it was easier to complete basic tasks in Figma using my mouse/keyboard. It’s possible that with time, I might have the same efficiency with the pen/tablet as I do with the keyboard/mouse. Finally, with Affinity Photo, I opened a blank canvas and wrote some text and drew a few pictures. I found that since the pen was so responsive on the tablet surface, it was easy to complete my drawing and writing tasks.

Given the price point of this digital drawing tablet, I thought the UGEE S1060 tablet was an exceptional design tool to add to my workspace.

2. Protective film on tablet doesn’t have an easy way to start the removal.
3. Application is required for tablet use — even on a macOS computer.

Over the past 18 months, I’ve worked very hard to enhance my CODM weapon collection with a wide variety of classes and skins. I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to enhance many of my guns with their Legendary and Mythic skins. One of my favorites — the M13 Morningstar — is getting ready to leave the store. This is a rerun of the original 2021 release of the Mythic M13 — not a redux.

This time around, this Mythic skin — or blueprint — was released in mid-July 2023. I had been eagerly awaiting the M13 Morningstar to make its appearance in the store, and as soon as it appeared, I snatched it up. Now that it’s about to leave the store — and there is no indication of when or if it will be available again — I don’t want others to let this opportunity slip away.

History of the M13 in Call of Duty

To understand why the Mythic version of this weapon is special, I thought I would provide a brief history of the M13 itself. The automatic assault rifle was originally released for Call of Duty: Mobile players in October 2021 as a part of Season 8 that year. It has become a fan-favorite weapon due to its high rate of fire. Even though it has a sub-par damage rating (consistent 5-shot kill), it has a lower recoil and larger magazine capacity than other assault rifles.

The real-world origins of this virtual firearm trace back to the H&K G36C, a German assault rifle developed in the 1990s. The G36C was designed to be compact and lightweight, making it ideal for close-quarters combat situations. The in-game M13 is also great for close range and mid-range combat.

The Power of the M13 Morningstar Mythic

Just like other guns in CODM, the M13 has Epic, Legendary, and Mythic skins available. The M13’s Mythic blueprint is referred to as Morningstar, after the angel of death, Azrael. As previously mentioned, this is a rerun of the 2021 release and all the same perks are included this time around. So, it’s a great time to pick it up if you didn’t get it the first time. It will take 8 upgrade levels to max it out. Many CODM laud the M13 Morningstar as the best non-upgraded Mythic in the game. That means you get a lot from the base level Mythic without having to upgrade it first, but you do get progressive add-ons that are worth the upgrade.

Some of the upgrades include:

• Four reactive stages — two kills, four kills, six kills, and eight kills — color starts yellow and gradually turns red
• Built-in Red Dot sight — helps with long-range battles
• Ammo Counter that shows remaining count of magazine
• Three (3) muzzle flashes
• Three (3) kill effects
• Stickers and trinkets

In addition to the skin and its add-ons, this Mythic crate also includes the Special Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley Character called ‘Ghost — Azrael’. This is the only Mythic Ghost character within CODM. This Ghost skin is based more on a mystic look than a military one, which is part of what makes it such a special option with this draw. It is all black so it’s great for multiplayer as well as battle royale.

How to Get a Mythic Weapon in CODM

Mythic Weapons can only be obtained through the purchase of Mythic Drop Crates within the game. These crates are only available for a limited amount of time and can only be bought using in-game CP (COD Points). That period of time is not specified so it really is a game of chance. Crates contain a series of items — including emotes, trinkets, and, of course, the Mythic skins. Here’s how the process works.

1. Open successive Mythic Drop Crates. Each crate costs more COD Points (CP).
2. As more crates are opened, more items are removed, which increases your chance of getting the Mythic skin.
3. Each crate has 10 rolls and you are guaranteed to receive the Mythic skin by the tenth roll. Ten rolls cost approximately 8,030 CP — or ~$75 USD (as of August 2023). You can use this Lucky Draw calculator to determine your spend on most types of draws in the game (global server only).

It is possible to get the skin on the first roll, but as I mentioned, it really is a game of chance, and the rolls are randomized.

While there are no real differences between the base stats of the standard, Epic, Legendary, and Mythic weapons, you might get different enhancements based on the skins (i.e. sights, etc.).

Final thoughts on the M13 Morningstar Mythic Drop

This is undoubtedly one of the best Mythic drops available in Call of Duty: Mobile, which is why it has been re-released just as it was two years ago. In my opinion, it’s 100% worth it to buy not only for the M13 Morningstar blueprint but also for the Ghost Azrael skin. With the possible exception of the emote, every step of this Mythic draw is worth owning. Check it out while you can!

Call of Duty: Mobile (CODM), a free-to-play first person shooter video game, continues to be one of the most popular mobile games available producing more than 1.27 billion dollars since its release in 2019. It offers a thrilling, immersive gaming experience that can travel with a player anywhere. One of the best features of the game is the large amount of weapons that are available to play with.

There are seven different classes of guns (assault rifles, sniper rifles, light machine guns, submachine guns, shotguns, marksman rifles, and pistols) as well as melee weapons, launchers, and then operator skills that all add to a player’s in-game abilities. I’ve spent a lot of time building out my profiles and been fortunate enough to be able to use nearly every gun offered in CODM. With that in mind, here are my top four favorite guns for Call of Duty: Mobile — chosen in part because I use them everyday.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Gun

Choosing the right gun can make all the difference in the intense world of Call of Duty: Mobile. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to determine which one suits your play style the best. Don’t underestimate the importance of this decision, as it can greatly affect your performance and, ultimately, your satisfaction with the game.

First off, understanding your preferred play style is crucial when selecting a gun. Are you a close-quarters combat specialist who loves rushing into battle? Or are you more comfortable providing support from a distance? Each gun has its own strengths and weaknesses, so choosing one that aligns with how you want to approach each match can be a game-changer. For example, SMGs like the QQ9 excel in close-range combat due to their high fire rate and mobility, while assault rifles like AK-47s provide versatility for medium to long-range engagements.

Furthermore, keep in mind that choosing a gun extends beyond simply considering its stats. Factors such as recoil control, reload time, and overall handling should not be overlooked. A weapon may have impressive damage numbers but if it kicks too much or takes ages to reload – it might not be worth using in fast-paced matches where split-second decisions can mean life or death. Understanding these intricacies will allow you to make an informed decision that optimizes your gaming experience.

In addition to your play style and the gun’s stats, you will also need to take teammates and game mode into consideration. If you have support from a team or clan, you will want to have a variety of guns when you go into battle together. It doesn’t do much good for you all to go in playing as snipers. The same is true for the different game modes. Since Battle Royale requires different tactics than Multiplayer mode, you will want to make sure and select your weapons to match your needs.

#1 DL Q33 – Sniper’s Delight

The DL Q33 is a bolt-action sniper rifle that is based on the real-life M200 Intervention by CheyTec. The rifle features a 6-round magazine as its default and it has a 46 RPM rate of fire. It’s rated with high penetration and moderate recoil. The DL Q33 is capable of one-shot belly kills and it’s one of the best choices for close range.

Why it made the list: I’m a sniper first and foremost and the DLQ is my baby. I use it everyday and this gun is the one I use the most by far. Because of that, adding the DL Q33 to this list as #1 was super easy for me.

#2 Kilo 141 – Powerhouse

Based on the real-life Heckler & Koch HK433, the Kilo 141 is a full automatic assault rifle that features a steady fire rate. It uses a 5.56 NATO caliber bullet and its magazine size is 30 rounds. The rate of fire is 751 RPM with a reload time of 1.34 seconds. Overall, the Kilo is a well-balanced assault rifle that is exceptionally powerful at close range.

Why it made the list: When I need a powerful, fast assault rifle to wreck the other team, the Kilo 141 is my go-to weapon. It provides speed and accuracy along with a lot of customizable options.

#3 LAPA – Rapid-fire Beast

The LAPA is one of the guns in the submachine gun class and is the in-game version of the LAPA SM-03, its real-life counterpart. The clip holds 30 rounds of 9mm caliber bullets. It is full automatic and causes 35 points of damage. The rate of fire is 697 RPM and it takes 2.4 seconds to reload. The LAPA is exceptionally versatile and its incredible mobility gives the user an edge over other gamers on the battlefield.

Why it made the list: Because I consider myself a sniper, I’ve never really given SMGs much thought. After a clan mate suggested that I might be better with the LAPA than a sniper rifle, I started to realize how reliable the gun actually is. It has power, speed, accuracy, and a fast reload speed.

#4 AK117

The AK117 is an automatic assault rifle that has a 938 RPM firing rate and has a 30-round magazine size. The reload time is 1.8 – 2.8 seconds depending on whether the magazine is loaded or unloaded. The AK117 is a powerhouse in CODM, providing players with unmatched firepower and versatility. What sets the AK117 apart from other assault rifles is its exceptional recoil control. Even during intense firefights, this beast of a gun remains stable, giving players the ability to land accurate shots consistently.

Why it made the list: Recently this amazing weapon got a Mythic release and it brought me back to using it. The Mythic feels much different then the Epic counterpart and what I love most about the AK117 is how it excels in multiple game modes. Its fast time-to-kill gives me an advantage in one-on-one battles, enabling swift elimination of foes without compromising my own safety. Additionally, the responsive mobility of the AK117 allows for quick movement around maps, offering a tactical advantage when pacing through different terrains.

Conclusion

It is undeniable that the various guns available in Call of Duty: Mobile (CODM) greatly contribute to the overall enjoyment and thrill of the game. One key aspect that makes my top 4 guns so enjoyable is their diversity, power, and efficiency. Each gun offers unique characteristics and caters to different play styles, which appeals to a wide range of players.

Each season a new group of guns are listed as the ‘meta’ weapons of the season. The DL Q33 and Kilo 141 are both popular among CODM streamers and even though the LAPA doesn’t usually make their lists, I’m still a big fan of it. The AK117 has been solid throughout the game and the recent addition of its amazing Mythic makes using it even better. If you want to try something new, check out these four guns. Level Lock+ with Apple Home Keys has a list price of $329 and is available through level.co, Apple.com, and Amazon. There are four different color options Matte Black, Satin Nickel, Satin Chrome, and Polished Brass. Level Lock+ is designed to work with standard exterior doors that meet ANSI specifications.

User Experience

The Level Lock+ comes in a very stout box. It’s tough and that’s a good thing because the hardware inside is somewhat heavy. The outside of the box shows the lock along with the “Works with Apple Home” moniker and a small splotch of color in the bottom corner that lets the user know what color the lock is on the inside. We opted for the Satin Nickel version because it looks clean and would match other door hardware even if it it wasn’t an exact match.

When you open the box, you will find a small envelope that reads, “Home starts here,” and a folded card-style brochure. This is the user manual and the envelope holds the key cards for the lock. One of the unique features of this lock is that it not only comes with physical keys and can be controlled via a smartphone app, but it also has key cards like one would use at a hotel. The card has an NFC chip installed and can be assigned to any user in the Level Lock app. The other items included in the box are: 2 strike plates, CR2 battery, long cap, 2 strike plate screws, 2 bold plate screws, 2 security bolts, the paddle housing (with motor), the bolt, and the key housing.

When it comes to installation, the process is fairly simple — if you already have a deadbolt in your door. If not, I recommend hiring a locksmith to come install the lock so that they can drill the hole precisely for you. It can be done without hiring a professional, but it can get messy. So, use your best discretion. We provided a thorough installation process explanation in our review of the standard Level Lock, which can be found here. The process is nearly the same as the biggest hardware difference is the technology stored in the paddle housing.

Once the hardware is installed, you have to go through the process of programming the lock to work with your Level Lock and HomeKit accounts. During the initial programming step, I had some issues with the lock talking to Home Keys. I was able to get the lock to respond to the Level Lock app and it was responsive to HomeKit, but when I tried to get it to unlock using the NFC options (key card, Apple Watch, or iPhone), the lock was stubborn. It worked 1 out of 5 times when I tried it. I got pretty frustrated and thought that it was faulty, so I walked away from it for a while.

When I came back, I didn’t have any issues with opening or locking the deadbolt using my phone or watch. I’m still not sure why that happened and the only explanation I have is that the system had to sync up completely. After then, I have not had any connection problems with it whatsoever. There is, however, a small delay between when the deadbolt is unlocked or locked and when the notification appears on our iPhones. I would say it’s a 5-10 second delay.

We’ve had good luck with the Level Lock+. It has assuaged our concerns with the door being secure and we haven’t been locked out of the house since installing it. The lock automatically locks itself after its designated time limit and the battery is still going strong.

Level Lock+ with Apple Home Keys is one of the few deadbolt options out there for Apple Home Key users. Apple has three that they sell through the Apple Store — Level Lock+, August Wi-Fi Smart Lock, and Yale Assure Lock. Schlage also has a Home Key – compatible deadbolt – the Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt – but it’s not sold by Apple. The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock and Yale Assure Lock are powered by the same technology and in my experience, have become unreliable when it comes to connectivity. The Level Lock+ is a strong, reliable product – despite its higher price point.

Conclusion

The Level Lock+ proves to be a reliable and secure smart lock option. Once properly synced, the Level Lock+ performs exceptionally well, providing a sense of security and convenience. The occasional delay in notifications when locking or unlocking the deadbolt is a minor inconvenience. Overall, our experience with the Level Lock+ has been positive, with no connection problems and the battery continuing to perform admirably. With its robust build, versatile control options, and reliable performance, the Level Lock+ is a worthwhile investment for those seeking a smart lock solution that combines convenience and peace of mind.
